On October 17, 2018, I launched a 3x per week email newsletter, mainly serving the Okanagan Valley’s cannabis-friendly audience. For those who don’t know me personally, I’m David Wylie.
I’ve been a journalist in the Okanagan for about 20 years. I grew up in Greater Toronto and worked for a national news service in Ottawa for a while. But mainly I’ve been senior editor at places like Castanet and The Daily Courier in Kelowna, B.C.
Now I finally admit to knowing a little more about pot than the average bear.
How convenient, right?
I smoked my first joint while in my early teens at a concert. High school was ‘higher’ education for me, and I got extra credits in risk management, supply and demand, and measuring in fractions.
I’m sure my parents knew more than they politely let on — hi mom and dad 🙂
Life rolls on and I became a straight-laced journalist. I’ve worked just about every job you can in newsrooms in Ontario and B.C.
My interest in marijuana reignited when the Liberals promised legalization in the last federal election.
“Now there is an opportunity,” I thought to myself. A brand new industry built from the ground up. It has a market potential in the tens of billions of dollars every year.
Since then, I talked about starting some kind of business in the sector. A bakery? A marketing agency? A smoke shop? I’m a little slow sometimes to realize the obvious answer.
A marijuana media company. Duh.
I looked to The Hustle for inspiration. It’s an email newsletter that just hit the 1 million subscriber milestone. Its clean design and snappy headlines were the perfect model for what I envisioned.
Of course, talk is just talk. I decided to take a risk and make it real. I hired a web developer and brand specialist, and some of the Okanagan’s best writers.
It’s pretty cool to be at the frontier of a new market.
