Bud Coast's Saltspring OG Shark recall

A recall over trace amounts of powdery mildew on a Joint Venture Craft Cannabis labelled product has the company rethinking its processes.

The company issued a voluntary recall of Bud Coast’s Saltspring OG Shark 3.5g tins of flower—SKU 1038652, lot CC22SEP2021.001.

In a news release, Joint Venture says the batch of OG Shark passed Health Canada lab testing, and had been thoroughly inspected by the wholesale team.

“While the issue is not systemic throughout every flower, we have made the decision to recall the entire batch to ensure the safety of our customers,” says the release.

Joint Venture says that in the wake of the recall, the company will be revising and reviewing its current standard operating procedures and processes. It will also add additional checkpoints and training aids for the processing team to ensure employees are able to better identify problems before cannabis goes out the door.

“With each and every bud hand-inspected this should not have happened,” says Joint Venture.

“When it comes to cannabis we are dealing with a product that is variable from batch to batch, plant to plant, and even bud to bud. This unfortunate voluntary recall has signalled a need for further diligence by JVCC at point of packaging.”

Meanwhile, the cannabis producer, Bud Coast, apologized for the recall.

“We understand that when consumers spend their money on a premium craft product they expect it to be pristine, this does not stand up to our quality standards so we are implementing a voluntary recall of this product,” says the company.

“Our sole purpose at Bud Coast is to showcase exceptional flower grown by local micro cultivators. We pride ourselves on being able to provide consumers with a top-quality product and despite our thorough wholesale lot inspection process, we did not catch this issue.”

The company says they are a small team and care deeply about their products.

“We are committed to fixing this issue and being a trusted source you can depend on for true quality cannabis.”
