No gov’t store in works for Vancouver

More than 100 days after legalization, the provincial government still does not have approval for a BC Cannabis Store anywhere in Greater Vancouver or the Okanagan.

It does have approval in other corners of BC, including Vancouver Island, the BC Interior, Northern BC, and the Shuswap.

“To date, we have received municipal approval to open BC Cannabis Stores in Campbell River, Williams Lake, Cranbrook, Terrace, Salmon Arm and Fort St John,” says the branch.

Kamloops, which is home to the only currently operating BC Cannabis Store in the province, has approved applications for two more stores.

“The Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) is continuing its efforts to roll out its network of BC Cannabis Stores across the province,” it says.

“The LDB is committed to working with municipalities to understand and align with their bylaws and business requirements, and has submitted applications to a number of municipalities throughout the province. At this time the LDB cannot say when additional stores might open, as lease negotiations are ongoing for many of the sites.”

We expect to know next week whether Kelowna has approved a location.

Even once a lease is secured, a store won’t pop up overnight. It can take up to seven months to develop the site for the store, says the branch.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a job with the LDB, check their job board.
